Meet the "Holy Land Star," a round-shaped natural purple star sapphire that holds the title of the largest of its kind ever documented. Ashan Amarasinghe, a renowned gem consultant, describes it as a true marvel. According to Amarasinghe, international appraisers estimate its value to be between $300 million and $400 million (Rp5,060,000,000,000 to Rp6,060,000,000,000).
"This is the pinnacle of purple star sapphires," Amarasinghe told the media. "It showcases a clear asterism phenomenon with six distinct rays, setting it apart from all other gems."
Asterism, as defined by Britannica, refers to a celestial-like pattern formed by a group of stars that can be observed with the naked eye.
The polished gem is owned by the Holy Land Star Team, who have chosen to remain anonymous for security reasons. One of the owners revealed that the stone was discovered in a remote gem mine near the town of Rathnapura, known as the "Gem City" of Sri Lanka, in 2023.
"It was purchased alongside other gems that same year, and it was only about two years later that we realized its extraordinary nature," said the owner. The team then obtained certifications from two laboratories to confirm its uniqueness.
