After the crisis, he continued serving in the Territorial Army and built a successful civilian career. However, he never anticipated the impact on his pension. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) didn't inform him about the consequences of retiring in Canada, and he only discovered the frozen pension policy later.
The triple lock system, which guarantees annual increases for UK state pensions, doesn't apply to those in Canada. This policy has been in place for decades, but campaigners argue it's a critical issue now, especially with Canada's trade negotiations. British pensioners in the US and EU receive full uprating, but those in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Commonwealth do not.
Sanguinetti's frustration is shared by many. He and his wife live frugally, rarely enjoying luxuries like holidays or eating out. The campaign 'End Frozen Pensions' highlights the burden on pensioners, with some losing more than half the real value of their pensions and others relying on local welfare. The Canadian Alliance of British Pensioners presented evidence to Canada's Standing Committee on International Trade, showing the financial impact on the UK government.
The campaign urges MPs to pause trade negotiations until the UK commits to pension uprating and modernizing the social security agreement. They argue that the UK's policy is unfair and costly, as British pensioners abroad save the government money in healthcare and other benefits. The injustice, they say, could be fixed with political will, and it's a test of Canada's commitment to its citizens.
