In a world where female-centric spaces are few and far between, Crossbar stands tall, a giant "Crossbar" sign boldly declaring its presence just a stone's throw from Brighton's Churchill Square. It's a statement, a declaration of intent, and a welcoming beacon for those seeking a different sports bar experience.
The idea for Crossbar was born out of a shared frustration. Lucy, a DIY enthusiast and sports lover, had long dreamed of creating a space where women's sports were celebrated and supported. Pippa, her wife, shared this vision, but it was the 2025 European Championship that truly ignited their passion.
"The tournament showcased the growing interest in women's sports, but the buzz seemed to fizzle out too quickly," Lucy explains. "It felt like a missed opportunity, and we wanted to create a space that kept the momentum going."
And so, they took the plunge. With an unloved bar on the corner of Upper North Street and Regent Hill as their canvas, they set to work. The deep green tiles, the black and white floors, the exposed brick - it all felt right. Pippa, who preferred the comfort of home for sports viewing, was won over by the potential of this space.
"We wanted to create an atmosphere where women could enjoy sports with friends, without the barriers or distractions often found in traditional pubs," she says.
But Crossbar is more than just a sports bar. It's a safe haven, a community hub, and a place where all fans of women's sports, regardless of gender, can gather and celebrate.
"The growth of women's sports relies on having dedicated spaces like this," Lucy emphasizes. "It's about creating an environment where people can easily access and enjoy the games they love, without the hassle of running around to different venues or dealing with screens being changed at the last minute."
And so, Crossbar opened its doors, and the response was electric. The launch night sold out in a matter of minutes, a testament to the need and desire for such a space.
"I've been waiting for a place like this," says Popsy Greader-Palme, an early patron. "A dedicated space where I can feel safe and enjoy women's football without judgment. It's a dream come true."
Serena Ferguson, another visitor, echoes this sentiment. "This is the perfect place for people like me. I wanted a nicer environment to enjoy the sport, away from the typical bar scene. Crossbar offers just that."
The three distinct spaces within Crossbar - the Clubhouse, the Boot Room, and the main bar area - cater to different groups and needs. It's a versatile space, designed to accommodate various sports viewing experiences and community gatherings.
For Lucy and Pippa, seeing their vision come to life has been a joy. "It's incredible to see how quickly Crossbar has taken off," Lucy shares. "Knowing that people can come here, enjoy a game, and feel comfortable and welcomed is a dream come true."
Funding the bar themselves, with Pippa investing her inheritance after the loss of her mother, was a brave move. "It wasn't scary because it was money we had to spare," Pippa explains. "My mum always encouraged us to use our resources wisely and try new things. I like to think she'd be proud of what we've achieved here."
The real pressure, they say, comes from ensuring that Crossbar lives up to the expectations of its enthusiastic community. "We want to create a space that exceeds their wildest dreams, a place where they feel at home and supported," Lucy adds.
And so, Crossbar continues to thrive, a beacon of change in the world of sports entertainment. It's a place where women's sports are celebrated, where communities gather, and where the legacy of a visionary mother lives on.
