The Medieval Chapel Built in Memory of a Young Prince (2026)

A medieval queen's sorrow may have inspired the creation of a significant yet now dilapidated chapel in Guildford, Surrey.

St. Catherine's Chapel, which graces the hills overlooking this historic town, is believed to have been financed by Eleanor of Provence, the dowager queen and widow of King Henry III. As suggested by tour guide Hugh Anscombe, the queen visited Guildford with her ailing grandson, Prince Henry, who tragically passed away at just six years old in 1274.

"It’s likely that this heartbreaking event influenced her decision to establish a magnificent chapel here," Anscombe remarked during an interview with Secret Surrey.

Constructed in the early 14th century by Richard de Wauncey, who served as the rector of St. Nicholas Church in Guildford, this Grade I listed structure was considered quite exotic and captivating for its time. Anscombe further elaborated that it served as a 'chapel of ease'—a place for local residents to attend church services without the lengthy trek into Guildford itself. This unique facility attracted many who were eager to witness its splendor.

"It’s remarkable that this site continues to exist, even in its ruined state," Anscombe expressed, adding, "I hope more individuals take the opportunity to discover it."

For those intrigued by lesser-known historical narratives, there’s much more to uncover about the fascinating tales hidden within Surrey.
