SEA Games 2025: Singapore's Epic 52 Golds! Football & Badminton Face Heat (2026)

Singapore's SEA Games Success: A Tale of Triumph and Reflection

In a thrilling display of athletic prowess, Team Singapore emerged from the 2025 SEA Games with a record-breaking performance, claiming an impressive 202 medals and securing their third-best gold medal haul of 52. However, amidst the celebrations, local sports administrators are taking a hard look at the rising regional competition and the areas where Singapore needs to step up its game.

The Team Singapore review, held at the Grand Fourwings Convention Hotel, was a moment of both pride and introspection. Chef de mission Lawrence Leow praised the Republic's athletes, especially the 926 strong contingent, nearly 60% of whom were SEA Games debutants. Their resilience, discipline, and national pride were evident as they competed across 48 sports, ultimately placing fifth on the medal table behind Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the overall success, certain sports, notably football and badminton, came under fire for underperforming. The Singapore Badminton Association president, Leow, acknowledged that his sport failed to deliver, with only two team bronze medals to show for their efforts. Top seeds like Loh Kean Yew and Jason Teh fell short of expectations, and Yeo Jia Min's absence due to injury further compounded the team's struggles.

And this is the part most people miss... The national men's under-22 football team also faced harsh criticism for their lack of quality and sportsmanship. Mark Chay, the secretary-general of the Singapore National Olympic Council, lambasted the team for their poor performance, which saw them crash out of the group stage for the sixth consecutive edition. Chay also highlighted the team's lack of gratitude towards their supporters, a stark contrast to the spirit of sportsmanship.

As the SEA Games move to Malaysia in 2027 and then to Singapore in 2029, where Su Chun-wei, the High Performance Sport Institute chief, expects an "extraordinary performance", the focus is on improvement. Sports like athletics, with its 47 events, are being urged to step up, along with extreme sports, pentathlon, sepak takraw, tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting, which failed to deliver medals.

So, what do you think? Is the criticism of football and badminton fair? Should we be more concerned about the rising regional threat, or is it a matter of fine-tuning our existing systems? Let's discuss in the comments and share our thoughts on how Singapore can maintain its sporting excellence in the face of increasing competition!
