Chinese EV maker Nio is at it again, gearing up to unveil exclusive, limited-edition models of its ET5 electric sedan and ET5 Touring wagon. Mark your calendars for December 16, when these special editions will make their grand entrance, sporting a distinctive purple exterior that's sure to turn heads.
But here's the twist: this isn't Nio's first rodeo with limited-edition models. The company has been on a roll since the second half of this year, releasing several limited-edition variants of the ET5 and ET5 Touring. And this strategy seems to be paying off, with the ET5 Touring accounting for a substantial 15.48% of Nio's total deliveries from January to November, according to CnEVPost data. The ET5, meanwhile, contributed 5.44% to the company's total deliveries during the same period.
Nio's limited-edition game began on July 4 with the launch of the Champion Edition for the ET5, ET5 Touring, and EC6 coupe SUV. These variants came with a premium price tag, reflecting their exclusive nature. Then, on October 17, Nio unveiled a black-themed ET5 Touring inspired by the sci-fi film Tron: Ares, limited to just 555 units. And the surprises didn't stop there. A recent regulatory filing hinted at yet another special edition—the Clean Parks Edition—for both the ET5 and ET5 Touring, tying into Nio's environmental initiative announced during the ET5 launch at Nio Day 2021.
And this is where it gets interesting: with these limited-edition models, Nio is not just boosting sales but also engaging its audience and creating a sense of exclusivity. It's a clever strategy that has the potential to spark debate among car enthusiasts and industry experts.
