A chilling mystery has unfolded in Madhya Pradesh, where a seemingly innocent bag of sweets left outside a Public Health Engineering (PHE) office has turned into a deadly enigma, claiming three lives and hospitalizing two others. What started as a case of suspected food poisoning has now taken a sinister turn, with investigators probing the possibility of targeted poisoning. But here's where it gets even more unsettling: the sweets, which caused rapid and uncontrollable drops in blood pressure followed by multi-organ failure, were found in an unclaimed bag containing raw vegetables and a box of cashew-garnished pedas—a type of sweet not commonly sold in the area. The tragedy began on January 9 when the abandoned bag was discovered outside the PHE office in Chhindwara. After no one claimed it, Dasaru Yaduvanshi, a 50-year-old security guard, took it home and shared the sweets with Sundar Lal Kathuria (72), his wife Santoshi Bai, and their granddaughter Khushboo Kathuria (22) at their family’s tea stall nearby. Within hours, all who consumed the sweets began experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and a drastic drop in blood pressure. Dasaru Yaduvanshi was the first to succumb on January 11, followed by Sundar Lal Kathuria two days later. Khushboo, who initially showed signs of recovery, suddenly deteriorated and passed away on Wednesday morning at AIIMS-Nagpur, bringing the death toll to three.
And this is the part most people miss: Khushboo’s sister, Shraddha Kathuria, has alleged that Khushboo had a troubled personal life following a love marriage. She had returned to her parents’ home with her three-month-old child due to alleged harassment by her in-laws, who had reportedly threatened to kill her. Shraddha claims her elder sister’s father-in-law is under suspicion, adding a disturbing layer of potential motive to this already complex case. Could this tragedy be linked to a personal vendetta?
Investigators are now scrutinizing every detail, from the unusual placement of the bag to the origin of the sweets. Santoshi Kathuria, Khushboo’s mother, remains hospitalized but is out of danger, while Khushboo’s sister, who also consumed the sweets, has been discharged after preliminary treatment. Autopsies and forensic tests are underway to determine the exact cause of death and the nature of the poison used. Meanwhile, the Kathuria family, which has lost two members, continues to grapple with unimaginable grief.
