After a challenging injury hiatus, reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez is back on the track, marking an emotional return to asphalt following his shoulder injuries sustained at last October’s Indonesian Grand Prix.
Marquez faced a significant setback when he collided with Marco Bezzecchi at Mandalika, leading to surgery and a meticulously planned recovery regimen. His rehabilitation journey has been gradual, starting from mountain biking, progressing through dirt track and motocross, and culminating in his much-anticipated return to tarmac.
"Back on the bike and getting the feeling back ❤️," Marquez shared joyfully on social media, expressing his excitement about getting back into the saddle.
The nine-time world champion took to the track riding a Ducati Panigale V2 under chilly conditions at the Aspar Circuit in Valencia. This day was marked by an unfortunate incident for fellow rider Fermin Aldeguer, who suffered a fractured femur during training (https://www.crash.net/motogp/news/1088366/1/ducati-motogp-race-winner-fermin-aldeguer-suffers-leg-fracture-training).
Notably, Ducati test rider Michele Pirro was also present at the circuit, alongside Marquez and former three-time MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo. Pirro had previously collaborated with Lorenzo during their time at Ducati in 2017 and 2018. Currently, Lorenzo is coaching Maverick Vinales, who has also been honing his skills at the Aspar facility.
As excitement builds, track action is set to continue on Friday, with Marc's younger brother and current MotoGP title runner-up, Alex Marquez (https://www.crash.net/motogp/racer/935450/alex-marquez), expected to join the fray.
Meanwhile, Gresini Racing has yet to announce the estimated recovery timeline for Aldeguer, but with the season-opening Sepang test just around the corner—scheduled for February 3-5—the pressure is mounting. This test will be particularly significant as it marks Marc Marquez's first MotoGP laps since the accident involving Bezzecchi on October 5.
