Amidst the frigid winter, a local artist's creative endeavor brings warmth and joy to the community. Pat Brodeur, a resident of Midland, has captivated the hearts of neighbors and visitors with his extraordinary snow sculptures. For four years, Brodeur has been transforming his backyard into a winter wonderland, showcasing his talent for sculpting with snow and ice. This year's masterpiece includes a functional igloo, a majestic polar bear, its cub, and an ice hole for a daring polar bear plunge. Brodeur's attention to detail is remarkable; the polar bear, standing three meters tall, is painted with black spray in the shape of claws, eyes, ears, and lips, mirroring the smaller, life-sized cub. The artist's dedication is evident as he raises the yard's level to create the illusion of an ice hole, ensuring a realistic and immersive experience. Brodeur's passion extends beyond the sculptures; he plans to take the plunge into the icy hole next week, followed by a visit to the nearby sauna. The creation process began with the help of excess snowfall during the December holidays, with Brodeur and his neighbors contributing. The igloo's initial design resembled a castle, inspired by a young neighbor's suggestion. Brodeur's previous sculptures include the Kraken sea monster, a mythical Yeti, and a dragon and castle, showcasing his versatility and creativity. While not a traditional woodcarver, Brodeur draws inspiration from his experience constructing wooden toys. His wife, Mary, admires his annual surprise, as he consistently improves and brings a twinkle to her eye with his winter creations.
