Lando Norris' Emotional Final Lap to F1 Glory: 'It Was Like a Movie' (2026)

Lando Norris’s first Formula One world title was celebrated in style, and he recalls the moment with cinematic clarity. After clinching the championship at the Yas Marina circuit by finishing third, Norris reflected on a race that saw his rival Max Verstappen win the race but fall just short in the overall standings by two points. Norris’s McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who had led much of the season, also played a pivotal role, ultimately finishing in third in the finale.

“It felt like a movie,” the 26-year-old said. “Even as I navigated every potential setback, I found myself replaying the journey—from that very first go-kart session and the initial time stepping onto a track, to the karting world championship I claimed in 2014, and the myriad moments along the way.

“I was both the driver and an observer, drifting into a kind of bird’s-eye view of my path, spanning roughly seven years of McLaren’s story—the highs, the lows, and the entire season’s arc.”

Norris also revealed a late-night celebration at the W Hotel overlooking Yas Marina, partying with friends until 6 a.m. before ending the night with a Sausage McMuffin at McDonald’s. “A breakfast of champions? Not really—my stomach reminded me of that in short order.”

In a tense Abu Dhabi finale, Norris had to keep his nerve and execute daring overtakes to secure the points needed for third place. Yet, even as the result finally arrived, he admitted that the full emotional impact of winning still felt unreal at the moment.

“Three laps from the end, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” he confessed. “I wondered whether this would truly mean something to me. Then, a few laps later, memories flooded in. It was like a life montage: crossing the final bridge, picturing my mum in the garage, and feeling tears prick.”

Norris’s decisive moment came as he completed the last corner and first glimpsed the chequered flag through his visor, a moment he cherished and wanted to savor as the defining triumph of his career to date.

As the 11th British driver to win the world championship, Norris sits among a storied lineage, yet he stressed that fame would not fundamentally change who he is. “Externally, it might alter life, but it won’t change me or how I approach it. I hope,” he said.

The season’s journey included notable ups and downs. Norris had battled Verstappen for the title last year from behind, and McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, pointed to two key factors that helped Norris close out his first championship: learning from setbacks and raising his own sense of possibility.

There were challenging moments this season, especially early on, when Norris struggled with front-end grip and qualifying pace. Those difficulties coincided with Piastri’s emergence as a strong title contender. The team responded by refining the car’s front suspension, which helped Norris feel more confident and enabled Stella to highlight the broader growth in Norris’s driving, racecraft, and personal development. In Stella’s view, Norris’s handling of the early-season hurdles marked a turning point that contributed significantly to the championship result.
