In a bold and thought-provoking fashion statement, Belgian designer Julie Kegels presented her Fall 2026 collection, titled "Auramaxxing," which delved into the intricate relationship between personal image and authenticity in today's hyper-visible world.
Kegels' runway show was a captivating spectacle, with models walking slowly and deliberately, drawing attention to the intricate construction of each garment. In an era obsessed with social media moments, this collection stood out as a rare and cerebral experience.
Inspired by Andy Warhol's concept of "aura" and the captivating long-exposure portraits of Korean artist Kyungwoo Chun, Kegels explored the contrast between shadow and authenticity. The result was a wearable collection that challenged conventional fashion norms.
Capes gracefully flowed from the shoulders, attaching discreetly at the ankles, creating a ghostly, billowing silhouette. Jackets slipped off the shoulders but were reimagined as elegant dresses, while pajama tops were transformed into dramatic gowns. Even a simple white button-down became a statement cape, and a skirt played with deconstruction, falling undone at the waist before swooping into a dramatic side drape.
To achieve these unique shapes, Kegels photographed her garments in her Antwerp atelier, manipulating the lighting to create shadows. She then worked with these distorted patterns to craft entirely new forms.
In another innovative approach, Kegels employed what she termed "forced tailoring" to create a more assertive stance. Sleeves were cut to push the arms forward with military precision, and shrunken pullovers were sliced open at the back of the shoulders, revealing small, colorful fabric wings.
"The aura is a shield," Kegels explained backstage. "We present an appearance, but it may not reflect our true selves. The Julie Kegels woman strives for control, yet acknowledges the inherent imperfection."
Exposed seams and unfinished edges further emphasized the theme of contrast. Interestingly, when Kegels' initially jarring little hats reminded her of the cute cartoon bird Calimero, she embraced the irony, incorporating more childlike references, such as cozy baby blankets turned into wrap skirts.
As Warhol once said, our "aura" can be fleeting, but in Kegels' skilled hands, the right outfit can extend that illusion, if only for a moment.
