Get ready for a celestial treat as we bid farewell to 2025 with the Ursid meteor shower, the final dazzling display of the year!
This annual event, a true highlight for stargazers, will reach its peak between Sunday night and Monday morning. Robert Lunsford, fireball report coordinator for the American Meteor Society, predicts a magical show with 5 to 10 meteors per hour gracing the skies.
But here's the catch: the Ursids are a bit shy compared to their flashy cousin, the Geminids. They prefer to make their appearance during the longest night of the year, the winter solstice, when the Northern Hemisphere is farthest from the sun.
And this is the part most people miss: the winter solstice, with its thin crescent moon, creates the perfect dark canvas for meteor watching. It's a celestial alignment not to be missed!
Unfortunately, our friends in the Southern Hemisphere won't be able to witness this spectacle. The radiant, or the point from which the meteors appear, never rises high enough for them to see.
The Ursids have their origins in the bowl of the Little Dipper, also known as the Ursa Minor constellation, near the bright orange star Kochab. This shower is a result of Earth's encounter with the debris trail left by comet 8P/Tuttle as it orbits the sun, as explained by EarthSky.
This year, we might be in for a special treat! Lunsford suggests that previous streams of debris from the comet could enhance the shower's activity. Each time comet 8P/Tuttle passes through the inner solar system, it leaves a unique trail of debris, and Earth might just pass through one of these enhanced trails.
"This year it is predicted that the Earth will pass through a particular trail which may give us a brief enhancement of activity," Lunsford shared via email.
Despite its lower meteor rates compared to the Geminids, the Ursids are still worth braving the cold and finding a dark spot away from city lights. Lunsford encourages viewers to face the northern half of the sky, focusing about halfway up, to catch these elusive meteors.
"It is highly suggested that one try to view from the darkest location possible," he advises.
So, bundle up, find a cozy spot, and prepare for a magical night under the stars. The Ursids might be the perfect way to end the year on a high note!
And here's a fun fact: the new year will kick off with a double celestial event! January's full moon, known as the wolf moon, will peak on January 3, coinciding with the first meteor shower of the year, the Quadrantids. While the Quadrantids are known for their bright fireballs, the full moon might dim their display.
