Spring training is just around the corner, and the Cincinnati Reds are already making moves! They've extended invitations to nine minor league players to join the big league camp, which is a fantastic opportunity for these rising stars. But who are these players, and what does this mean for the upcoming season? Let's dive in!
With pitchers and catchers reporting on February 9th, and position players following on February 14th, the anticipation is building. While the 40-man roster players are guaranteed spots, these nine additional players from the minor leagues are getting a golden chance to shine.
The Reds have a pretty balanced mix here, with five pitchers and four position players receiving non-roster invites.
The pitchers include right-handers Tejay Antone, Hagen Danner, Lyon Richardson, and Carson Spiers, along with left-hander Joel Valdez. On the position player side, we've got catcher Will Banfield, infielder Michael Chavis, and utility players Garrett Hampson and Michael Toglia.
Interestingly, eight of these nine players have already tasted big-league action. Even Hagen Danner, with just one out recorded in a single MLB appearance, has the experience under his belt.
Joel Valdez is the lone player yet to reach the majors. The Reds snagged him in the minor league Rule 5 draft in the winter of 2024. He then had a breakout season in 2025 with Double-A Chattanooga, where he put up impressive numbers: a 1.38 ERA in 26 games, throwing 45.2 innings, allowing only one home run, walking 20, and striking out 55 batters. However, his stint with Triple-A Louisville was a bit rough, giving up 8 earned runs in 12.0 innings.
This likely isn't the end of the invites. The Reds typically extend more invitations, and it's highly probable that more prospects will get their chance in the coming weeks.
But here's where it gets interesting... Joel Valdez, despite his strong performance, isn't considered among the team's top prospects. This raises the question: what specific qualities or potential does the coaching staff see in him that they're willing to give him this opportunity?
