Cadex Responds: Hookless Rims NOT to Blame for Capiot's Wheel Failure! (2026)

A shocking wheel failure at Omloop het Nieuwsblad has sparked a debate, but Cadex is quick to defend its hookless rim design. Could this be a case of user error or a design flaw?

Cadex, a renowned cycling brand, has responded to the dramatic incident involving Team Jayco-AlUla's Amaury Capiot, whose wheel-tyre system failed during the race. The brand claims that the failure was not due to the hookless rim design, but rather the result of continued use on cobblestones after the tyre deflated.

Hookless rims, a Giant-owned innovation, have been a topic of discussion in the cycling world. Despite concerns, Cadex asserts that the tyre separation was not caused by the design. Their investigation, conducted with the team, revealed that prolonged riding on cobblestones with a flat and damaged Cadex Aero Cotton tyre led to the rim cracking.

This crack caused the spokes to displace and the wheel to collapse, resulting in the tyre completely detaching from the rim. But here's where it gets controversial: was this an isolated incident or a potential design concern?

The team spokesperson initially suggested that riding on cobbles with a flat tyre was the cause. However, images show that Capiot was using a tyre liner, a common practice for teams during cobbled classics, which should have provided some protection. But, this wasn't enough to save the rim.

Interestingly, Cadex and Giant don't recommend tyre liners with their products, and the team's use of one might have been a deviation from guidelines. Yet, the liner's role in the failure remains unclear.

Cadex's statement highlights the initial impact speed and the rider's continued journey on the cobbles. But, the question remains: Is this a warning for riders to avoid pushing their equipment too far, or a design issue that needs addressing?

And this is the part most people miss: despite the failure, Cadex claims the wheel remained stable enough to prevent a crash. But, should riders trust their equipment to withstand such extreme conditions?

What do you think? Are hookless rims truly safe, or is this a wake-up call for riders and manufacturers alike?
