And this is the part most people miss: The trip's overall cost, as disclosed in Senate estimates, included substantial amounts for flights and accommodation. While the assistant secretary for online safety's flights cost $22,236, accommodation and transport expenses were around $24,000.
Interestingly, the high costs didn't raise any red flags in the correspondence between the travel agency and the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority (IPEA). The average Qantas business class fare for the same route is typically between $20,000 and $30,000 return, making Ms. Wells' expenses notably higher.
Ms. Wells justified her travel, emphasizing the event's importance, and has since referred her expenses for an audit. But the question remains: Was this level of expenditure truly justified?
The original flight bookings, as seen in September emails, show a one-way business class fare from New York to Melbourne costing over $18,000 for Ms. Wells and $20,000 for her staffer. But then, the Optus crisis hit. Ms. Wells decided to delay her departure, staying in Australia to address the issue. The CTM travel team scrambled to rearrange her travel plans, securing a last-minute business class ticket for Ms. Wells to fly to New York two days later, with a slightly discounted fare.
